CATHOLIC MUSICIANS OF SOUTH FLORIDA AIDE IN KEEPING THE DOORS OF A HOME FOR ABANDONED CHILDREN IN GUATEMALA OPEN (Miami, FL) - On Friday October 26th at 8:00PM Catholic Hispanic singers and musicians of South Florida will unite in the third rendition of the concert series Músicos al Rescate (Musicians to the Rescue). On this occasion the event will benefit Misioneros del Camino (Missioners of the Road), a home for abandoned children in Guatemala which was established 18 years ago by Leonor Portela. "Due to the recent situation in the United States, the community that generally supports us could not carry out the annual fundraiser for our kids", Leonor Portela comments. "The Musicians to the Rescue concert will prevent the closing of our home due to lack of funds", Leonor adds. The home Missionaries of the Road currently houses more than 50 abandoned children, many taken in from the streets and trash dumps around the city. Individuals and donations from various corporations solely fund the home. No government support is received from the Guatemalan authorities because Leonor Portela, founder of the home, is not a citizen of Guatemala. Some of the Catholic musicians which will participate in the benefit concert include: Cristy Arias (Cuba), Jorge Enrique del Rivero (Cuba), Fernando Gómez (Ecuador), Grupo Alianza, Miguel Angel Guerra (Honduras), Orlando Ponce (Nicaragua), Julio Torres (Puerto Rico), Sara Torres (Nicaragua), Iraida Yocham (Cuba), with special appearance by renowned pianist Rey Casas. In addition many more singers and musicians from South Florida will participate in a joint choir. The Músicos al Rescate concert will take place at St. Michael The Archangel Church, 2987 W. Flagler St., Miami, FL. Músicos al Rescate is a concert series organized by Catholic Musicians of South Florida in order to offer spiritual and financial assistance to those in need.
